Cheryl Reeve, Minnesota coach, claims WNBA Finals series was ‘stolen’ due to poor officiating in Liberty loss

NEW YORK — The 2024 WNBA Finals left a lasting impact on league history. The series between the Minnesota Lynx and the New York Liberty showcased the beauty of competition and served as a great advertisement for a season that saw record viewership and excitement.

However, the finals also shed light on issues with the WNBA officiating. The referees’ performance did not meet the standard set by the players, compromising the overall quality of the league’s product.

“It’s disappointing to see officiating play such a significant role in a series like this,” expressed Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve after a 67-62 overtime loss to the Liberty. “Officiating should not be this challenging,” she added.

The focus of the conversation surrounding a crucial game featuring star players Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier should have been on basketball. Instead, it was dominated by complaints about the refereeing and accusations of favoritism towards the team with the bigger market and more popular star.

The Lynx’s frustration stemmed from a controversial call near the end of regulation, highlighting disparities in officiating throughout the game, including uncalled fouls on Collier. The Lynx felt that the game was unjustly taken from them.

This wasn’t the first time Reeve criticized officiating in the postseason. She has been vocal about similar issues in the past, emphasizing the long-standing problem the WNBA faces with quality officiating.

Several games in the series ended with coaches expressing dissatisfaction with the officiating, reflecting a broader issue within the league. This calls for introspection and improvement in how officials are trained and assigned to games.

As the league gains more attention and fans, ensuring fairness in officiating becomes crucial to maintaining fan engagement and belief in the integrity of the competition.

While venting frustrations about referees is a common practice in sports, the lack of consistency and quality in officiating during critical moments of the WNBA Finals detracted from the otherwise spectacular series.

It’s essential for the league to invest more in refining its officiating standards to avoid similar controversies in the future. Both players and fans deserve better than what transpired in Game 5.
