Announcement: Kumi Naidoo Named President of Fossil Fuel Non Proliferation Treaty Initiative
The Fossil Fuel Non Proliferation Treaty Initiative (https://FossilFuelTreaty.org/) is entering a new phase with the appointment of Kumi Naidoo as its new President. With over 30 years of experience in activism and leadership, Naidoo will play a crucial role in advancing the organization’s mission to promote a global plan for a just transition away from fossil fuels.
Kumi Naidoo, a prominent environmental and human rights advocate from South Africa, has been at the forefront of global movements for climate justice, sustainable development, and human rights. With past roles as Executive Director of Greenpeace International and Secretary General of Amnesty International and CIVICUS, Naidoo brings a wealth of experience to his new position.
In response to his appointment, Kumi Naidoo stated: “The Fossil Fuel Treaty is a movement for global justice, aiming to address the environmental, health, and social risks posed by fossil fuels. We need international cooperation to swiftly transition away from these harmful resources and ensure that all communities are included in the process. The time to act is now.”

Fossil fuels also impact health, security, and the achievement of UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) (https://apo-opa.co/4dkGGGp). It is clear that a shift away from fossil fuels is essential for a sustainable future.
Kumi Naidoo’s appointment was celebrated by the initiative’s steering committee, who emphasized the importance of his leadership in uniting countries to negotiate a global plan for a rapid transition away from fossil fuels. The committee also welcomed Reverend James Bhagwan as the new Co-Chair.
Tzeporah Berman, Chair and Founder of the Fossil Fuel Treaty initiative, expressed excitement about Naidoo’s appointment and highlighted his vision and commitment to justice. Berman emphasized the need for bold leadership to confront the challenges posed by the fossil fuel industry and create a sustainable future.
Mohamed Adow, Founder and Director of Power Shift Africa, praised Naidoo’s appointment and stressed the urgency of addressing climate impacts and energy poverty. Adow highlighted the importance of amplifying the voice of marginalized communities in the fight against fossil fuels.
Reverend James Bhagwan, as the new Co-Chair, highlighted the role of faith communities in mobilizing climate action and emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to achieve a sustainable future through the Fossil Fuel Treaty.
