Press Release: Promotional Mission in the Republic of Cabo Verde

The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the Commission) is currently on a promotion mission in the Republic of Cabo Verde from 16 to 20 September 2024, following an invitation from the government of Cabo Verde. This mission is in line with Article 45(1) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and Rule 76(1) of the Commission’s Rules of Procedure (2020), as part of the Commission’s mandate to promote human rights.

The delegation from the Commission includes Honorable Commissioner Maria Teresa Manuela, Country Rapporteur and Special Rapporteur on Prisons, Conditions of Detention and Policing in Africa, who is leading the delegation, as well as Honorable Commissioner Hatem Essaiem, Chairperson of the Committee for the Prevention of Torture in Africa. African Union officials from the Commission’s Secretariat are also providing technical support during the mission.

During the mission, the delegation will engage in dialogue with key stakeholders in Cabo Verde, including government officials, members of Parliament and the judiciary, representatives of UN agencies, civil society organizations (CSOs), and others who can provide insights into the human rights situation in the country. The delegation will also visit detention facilities and hold a sensitization workshop with CSOs on the Commission’s mandate.

The mission will conclude with a press conference where the delegation will present its preliminary findings on the human rights situation in Cabo Verde. The Commission extends its gratitude to the Government of Cabo Verde and all stakeholders for their cooperation in ensuring the success of this promotion mission.
