Xi Jinping Holds Meeting with President of Chad Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno

President Xi Jinping met with President of Chad Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno on the morning of September 3, 2024, during the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. They announced the elevation of the China-Chad relationship to a strategic partnership.

China-Chad cooperation within the Belt and Road Initiative and FOCAC framework has been successful, making China Chad’s largest trading and investment partner. Xi Jinping expressed readiness to strengthen ties with Chad, uphold China-Africa friendship, and enhance development strategies.

Xi Jinping appreciated Chad’s support on issues important to China and assured continued backing for Chad’s independent development path. Both sides agreed to deepen cooperation, leverage FOCAC Summit outcomes, and boost economic and trade ties for mutual development. They also pledged to implement the Global Security Initiative for national security and stability.

President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno thanked China for the warm invitation to the FOCAC Beijing Summit and highlighted the fruitful cooperation based on mutual respect and benefit. Chad looks forward to further deepening cooperation with China for mutual benefits. He admired China’s development achievements and supported the one-China principle regarding Taiwan.

During the summit, China and Chad will sign cooperation agreements on the Global Development Initiative, human resources development, peanut and sesame exports, and news and media cooperation. Wang Yi was present at the meeting.
