UNHCR Increases Emergency Aid in Alkufra, Libya to Assist Sudanese Refugees in Response to Influx

Due to the deteriorating crisis in Sudan, an increasing number of refugees are now fleeing to Libya. Approximately 97,000 individuals have sought refuge in the country since the conflict began.

Alkufra, a crucial entry point for Sudanese refugees into Libya, is currently overwhelmed, with around 350 new arrivals from Sudan every day. Recent flooding in the region has also affected vital local infrastructure, leading some refugees to seek temporary shelter in schools.

Many refugees are living in makeshift tents on farms outside Alkufra. Without adequate water, sanitation facilities, and safe shelters, they are vulnerable to extreme weather conditions and health hazards.

UNHCR is concerned that without proper support, women, children, and other vulnerable individuals will face increased risks of violence. The precarious living conditions put women and children at higher protection risks, while children are more vulnerable to malnutrition, disease, and disruptions to their education.

In response to the crisis, UNHCR and its partners have expanded their emergency aid operations in eastern Libya. This expansion has been possible through the cooperation of Libyan authorities, who have allowed access to affected areas for UNHCR and partners to provide critical aid to those in need.

Since the conflict began, UNHCR has assisted over 8,000 refugees in Alkufra with essential aid such as blankets, mattresses, tarpaulins, and personal care supplies. The organization has also provided Alkufra General Hospital with essential medical supplies like medicine, hospital beds, wheelchairs, electrocardiographs, and prenatal care tools.

“Women and children are bearing the brunt of this crisis,” said Aseer Al Madaien, UNHCR Chief of Mission in Libya. “As we witness a continuous influx of refugees escaping unimaginable circumstances, we urge the international community to support Sudanese refugees who have been generously hosted by countries in the region.”

UNHCR’s response is part of a broader strategy to integrate protection through coordinated UN actions and other initiatives to assist local authorities in meeting the significant needs.

As outlined in the 2024 Regional Refugee Response Plan for Sudan, UNHCR, along with UN agencies and NGOs, aims to aid 195,000 Sudanese refugees and Libyan host communities. An urgent $48 million is required to provide life-saving assistance, including food, healthcare, clean water, and temporary shelter.
