For too long, communities in Western Equatoria have suffered from the conflicts plaguing the region. Violence outbreaks near Tambura in 2021 and April 2024 led to loss of life, destruction of property, and mass displacement of civilians.
As the country gears up for its first democratic elections, it is crucial to ensure an open and inclusive civic and political space, especially in troubled areas like Western Equatoria.
To support this goal, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, in collaboration with the African Union and Intergovernmental Authority on Development, organized a political parties forum in Yambio, the capital of Western Equatoria. The forum aimed to encourage constructive dialogue among communities affected by conflict.
“In order to ensure free, fair, and credible elections, it is essential for all partners in the peace process to work together. This is crucial for long-lasting stability,” stated Jane Kony, Head of the UNMISS Yambio Field Office.
The Prime Minister of the Azande Kingdom, Tadio Mario Sasa, emphasized the importance of full participation in decision-making processes for traditional leaders.
Representatives of women called for their rights to be protected and respected in decision-making and leadership roles.
Participants also addressed key elements of the Revitalized Peace Agreement, such as security arrangements, essential for peaceful elections.
After intense discussions, the participants reached agreements and signed a Joint Communique endorsed by the State Council of Ministers, fostering optimism and unity among the community.
These efforts aim to restore the peaceful co-existence enjoyed by the community before the recent conflicts, paving the way for active participation in nation-building.
