The United Nations official for Somalia visited the Federal Member State (FMS) of Puntland today, engaging in discussions with President Said Abdullahi Mohamed ‘Deni’ on various local and national topics.
Key topics of the meeting included efforts to improve security and reduce tensions within Puntland. The UN Secretary-General’s Acting Special Representative for Somalia, James Swan, commended the authorities in Puntland for their actions in addressing terrorist threats and resolving clan conflicts.
During a press conference in Garowe, Mr. Swan highlighted the need to address piracy incidents and manage migration flows in the region. He also acknowledged preparations for local elections in Nugal region as a step towards democratization.
President Deni and Mr. Swan also discussed national priorities such as combating terrorism, constitutional reforms, and upcoming elections. Mr. Swan emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation among Somali leaders to address the country’s challenges.
Development and humanitarian support were also key areas of focus during the meetings. Mr. Swan emphasized the UN’s efforts to align with Puntland’s Development Plan and support the country’s development goals.
A budget of $120 million has been allocated for humanitarian, development, and peace-building interventions in Puntland, reflecting the UN’s commitment to supporting the region’s progress. Mr. Swan has also met with leaders from other Federal Member States as part of his outreach efforts.
James Swan, appointed by the UN Secretary-General in 2024, continues to work closely with Somali leaders to advance the country’s development and stability.
