Welcome to the Council’s agreement on a Presidential Statement regarding UNOWAS. It is crucial during this challenging time in the region and signifies the Council’s full support for peace and security in the area. Kudos to the penholders Sierra Leone and Switzerland for their outstanding work in reaching this agreement.
Today, we would like to highlight four key points:
Firstly, we applaud Mauritania and Senegal for their peaceful power transfers, but note that democracy and civic space are under pressure in the region. We also emphasize the importance of restoring constitutional order in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea.
Secondly, the deteriorating security situation in the Sahel requires a serious cross-regional response. Foreign mercenaries and proxies worsen conflicts and pose threats to civilians. We urge UNOWAS to facilitate negotiations and bring all parties back to the table.
Thirdly, the humanitarian crisis in the region is worsening, with food insecurity reaching record levels. We call for safe and unimpeded access for humanitarian aid to address these urgent needs.
Lastly, we are optimistic about the region’s economic growth potential despite current challenges. The UK is committed to deepening partnerships in the region to drive both growth and security.
