President Joseph N. Boakai, Sr. welcomed a leadership delegation from the University of Liberia at the Executive Mansion on July 2, 2024.
The student delegation, led by Mary Korpo Kerkula, the President of the University of Liberia Student Union (ULSU), included leaders from various student organizations such as the Student Integration Movement (SIM), the Student Democratic Alliance (STUDA), the Progressive Student Alliance (PROSA), the Varsity Christian Fellowship, and the University of Liberia Muslim Student Association. Miss Kerkula leads the Student Unification Party (SUP).
During their meeting with President Boakai, the students, represented by Kerkula, praised the President for addressing issues within the University and presented six crucial areas that require the government’s attention.
Key concerns included the need for facility improvements, campus renovations, upgrades to laboratories, provision of tools and international standard materials for libraries. The students also emphasized the importance of internet connectivity at the Student Union Resource Center for enhanced digital access and communication.
Furthermore, the students highlighted the necessity for internship opportunities, scholarships, student exchange programs, and creating handicap-friendly facilities to support physically challenged students.
In response, President Boakai acknowledged the significant role the University of Liberia plays in the nation’s development and as a refuge for students from conflict-ridden African countries. He pledged to enhance the learning environment at the University.
President Boakai advised the students to seek solutions through dialogue rather than violence, and assured them of his commitment to open communication. He also addressed concerns regarding scholarships and disability access.
Chairman of the University Board of Trustees, Senator Numene T.H. Bartekwa, reported a noticeable improvement in the campus atmosphere since measures were taken to restore calm by the President and Visitor to the University.
