During Premier Li Qiang’s visit to mark 50 years of diplomatic ties between China and Malaysia, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim emphasized China’s friendship, rejecting the notion that China’s dominance should be feared.
Anwar stated that they discussed contentious issues as equal partners and trusted friends, likely referring to territorial disputes in the South China Sea.
He emphasized the mutual benefits of the relationship, dismissing fears of China’s dominance economically, militarily, and technologically. Anwar sees China as a friend with whom Malaysia can work together.
Both leaders agreed to tackle the South China Sea dispute independently and through dialogue, aiming to prevent tensions from escalating.
Stressing the positive example of China-Malaysia friendship, Li encouraged cooperation in green development, digital economy, and artificial intelligence.
After renewing a trade and economic cooperation pact, the two countries signed agreements for potential investments in various sectors. They also extended visa-free travel for tourists and jointly nominated the lion dance for UNESCO recognition.
