Reigning champions Kabras Sugar are on the verge of accomplishing an impressive feat in Kenyan rugby. They have remained unbeaten for two consecutive Kenya Cup seasons and are now gearing up to face their eternal rivals, KCB Rugby, in the 85th Enterprise Cup final at the RFUEA Grounds on Saturday, 8 June 2024.
The team from Kakamega has been in outstanding form, securing the 2023 Kenya Cup title without a single loss.
They maintained their dominance by staging a thrilling comeback to defeat KCB 30-27 in last year’s Enterprise Cup final.
In the current season, Kabras Sugar replicated their flawless performance in the league, once again winning the 2024 Kenya Cup without facing a loss.
The upcoming clash with KCB is not only a battle for the prestigious Enterprise Cup but also an opportunity for Kabras Sugar to achieve the perfect league and cup double for the second year in a row. However, KCB stands in their way, a team that has historically had the upper hand in their rivalry.
The stage is set for an exciting match as Kabras Sugar looks to extend their unbeaten streak and cement their legacy in Kenyan rugby history.
Following his team’s 54-8 victory over 25-time champions Nondescripts in the semifinals, Kabras Sugar Head Coach Carlos Katywa told Citizen Digital, “It will be a big game. KCB is lucky to have played in the Enterprise Cup for two games, unlike us who only had the semis. They have a fully fit squad, so it’s going to be an interesting match. We need to be strategic in our approach against them.”
Meanwhile, KCB Assistant Coach Mariko Mshilla, after the team’s 32-18 win over Kenya Harlequin in the semifinals, said, “It has been two weeks since we played a match, and I am extremely proud of the team for executing our game plan. The players seemed a bit rusty, but we will engage in intense training next week in preparation for the showdown. I am confident that we can secure our sixth title and emerge victorious.”
Kabras Sugar will be aiming for their fourth consecutive title, having won in 2019, 2022, and 2023, while KCB is pursuing their sixth title, having emerged victorious in 2004, 2007, 2015, 2016, and 2017.
Both teams have announced their matchday squads for the final, which will be preceded by the KRU Nationwide League final between Zetech Oaks and TUM Marines at 1:00 pm at the same venue.
Victor Oduor will officiate the match, with Innocent Kimathi and Kevin Wambugu serving as assistant referees.
