The ECOWAS Gender Development Centre (EGDC) Hosts Meeting to Advance Gender Equality and Women Empowerment in the ECOWAS Region

The ECOWAS Gender Development Centre (EGDC) is hosting the 2nd edition of the meeting of the regional coordination committees of its flagship programmes in Saly – Portudal, Senegal from June 04 to June 08, 2024. The main purpose of the meeting is to share updates on the progress of the programmes and make recommendations to enhance their implementation.

Experts in education, health, and women’s entrepreneurship from the 15 ECOWAS Member States, the ECOWAS Commission, and Agencies are gathering to discuss the technical and financial management of EGDC’s flagship programmes. The focus will be on key initiatives such as the Medical and Financial Support Programme for women and girls with obstetric fistula, the Support Programme for Promotion of Young Girls in specialized training with Excellence Scholarships, and the Support Programme for Women in processing agricultural, fishery, and handicraft products in ECOWAS Member States.

Recognizing the importance of gender equality and empowerment of women and girls for economic growth and sustainable development in the region, the EGDC has been implementing programmes in health, education, and women’s entrepreneurship since 2010.

To address implementation challenges at the Member State and ECOWAS level, a coordination meeting has been organized inviting various committees, ECOWAS national offices, and Permanent Representations. Discussions will focus on the audit report on the scholarship programme, technical and financial management arrangements, and defining roles of the entities involved.

The meeting aims to establish stronger strategies for improving the implementation of EGDC’s flagship programmes in Member States. Participants include representatives from the ECOWAS Commission, technical agencies, and Regional Coordinating Committees for EGDC programmes.

Attendees will also include ECOWAS Permanent Representations, National Offices, Gender Focal Points, technical and financial partners, experts, and EGDC representatives.
