DENVER — The idea that the Minnesota Timberwolves’ magic depended solely on Rudy Gobert was quite comical.
They were trailing by 20 points against the defending champion Denver Nuggets with 22 minutes remaining when the NBA’s most controversial player ignited a remarkable comeback.
History favored the Nuggets, as teams leading by at least 15 points at halftime in Game 7s had a perfect 21-0 record at that point. Charles Barkley also called for Minnesota coach Chris Finch to “take Gobert out the game.”
But then Nikola Jokić lost Gobert on the left wing, allowing Karl-Anthony Towns to find the French big man with a dump-off pass for a dunk at 9:51 in the third quarter. This play, seen as inconsequential at the time, changed the course of the game.
At the 7:43 mark of the fourth quarter, Gobert made a miraculous spinning fadeaway shot from the left side, capping a 41-17 run for the Timberwolves. The game showcased their resilient defense and rebounding prowess while highlighting their offensive contributions. The Timberwolves secured a 98-90 victory, advancing to their first West finals since 2004.
Anthony Edwards, who struggled in the first half but finished strong with 16 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists, emphasized the team’s defensive identity. The Timberwolves’ offense, rejuvenated by their defensive effort, surged to secure the historic win.
The highlight of the game came from Gobert’s turnaround shot, symbolizing the Timberwolves’ remarkable turnaround.

Edwards and Towns reflected on the game’s turning point with humor and camaraderie, underscoring their chemistry on and off the court.
The victory held special significance as it coincided with the 20-year anniversary of Minnesota’s previous Game 7 win in the West semifinals. Kevin Garnett’s memorable promise and the historic nature of this win resounded with fans and players alike.
Despite a slow start, Gobert’s impactful contribution proved his detractors wrong, showcasing his value to the team’s success. The Timberwolves’ head coach, Chris Finch, played a pivotal role in guiding the team to victory, earning praise from the players for his leadership and tactical acumen.
Overall, the Timberwolves’ Game 7 triumph against the Nuggets marked a significant milestone in their journey, highlighting their resilience, team cohesion, and relentless pursuit of success.
