The government is implementing strong measures to lessen the impact of floods in the country, as stated by President William Ruto.
The President mentioned that the government has adopted a “Whole of Government Approach” to ensure an effective response to the crisis following meteorological reports predicting increased rainfall.
He pointed out that Cabinet Secretaries will lead disaster response and mitigation efforts nationwide.
During a National Address at State House Nairobi, President Ruto emphasized that the Treasury will allocate resources for the purchase and distribution of food, medical supplies, and other essentials.
He also highlighted the importance of coordination between national and county governments, as well as development partners, to enhance disaster response and mitigation efforts across the country.
President Ruto instructed the Ministry of Education to delay school reopenings until further notice and directed county security committees to define riparian reserve boundaries for evacuation.
Furthermore, the Kenya Defence Forces and National Police Service are deploying resources for public safety and mitigation operations, with support from the National Youth Service and National Government Administration officers.
The government is collaborating with stakeholders to provide temporary shelter, food, and essential supplies to those affected by the floods.
President Ruto urged MPs to prioritize the reconstruction of school infrastructure damaged by floods and extreme weather, using National Government Constituency Development Fund allocations.
He warned about a potential cyclone, named Hidaya, that could affect Kenya’s coast, causing heavy rain, strong winds, and dangerous waves. He advised those in flood-prone areas to relocate promptly to safer areas.
While addressing the immediate crisis, the President emphasized the need for long-term action to combat climate change by restoring the ecosystem and planting 15 billion trees over the next decade.
