Preliminary results reported by local media on Monday indicate that Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu’s political party has emerged victorious in parliamentary elections, signaling strong support for his pro-China foreign policy.
The People’s National Congress secured 70 out of 93 seats in Sunday’s vote, and with three additional seats from its allies, now holds absolute control of Parliament, as per the preliminary results.
On the other hand, the Maldivian Democratic Party, led by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and viewed as pro-India, saw a significant drop in seats from 65 to 15, compared to the previous Parliament, according to Mihaaru.com.
Official results are anticipated to be released later today.
The regional powers of India and China closely observed the election, as they vie for influence in the strategically situated archipelago nation.
President Muizzu’s pro-China stance, exemplified by the removal of Indian troops from a Maldivian islet, has intensified the rivalry between India and China since his election last year.
The election results came more easily than expected for Muizzu, despite initial predictions of a tough battle due to rifts within his coalition and the addition of more parties in the contest.
Six political parties and independent groups fielded a total of 368 candidates for the 93 parliamentary seats, which have been increased by six to account for population growth.
Muizzu’s presidential campaign centered around the theme of “India out,” criticizing his predecessor’s alleged compromising of national sovereignty by granting India excessive influence.
Efforts are underway to transition civilian personnel to assume the tasks previously carried out by Indian military personnel, including operating aircraft and aiding in sea rescues.
Tensions escalated when Indian social media users initiated a boycott of Maldives tourism in response to derogatory remarks made by Maldivian officials about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
India’s ranking as the top source of foreign visitors to Maldives has dropped to sixth place, as per government statistics.
In efforts to strengthen ties with China, President Muizzu visited the country earlier this year and negotiated an expansion in tourist numbers and flights from China.
In 2013, Maldives joined China’s “Belt and Road” initiative, aimed at fostering economic growth and connectivity across Asia, Africa, and Europe.
