Ryan Day believes that Ohio State can finally break through fueled by donor spending spree.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Following Ohio State’s 30-24 loss to Michigan last November, Coach Ryan Day appeared defeated and despondent at the postgame press conference. Despite winning 88% of his games as a head coach, Day and his program were now overshadowed by a three-year losing streak to the Wolverines.

Fast forward four months, and Day is now sitting in his office at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center with a smile on his face. He exudes confidence, knowing the talent on his roster is exceptional, with the return of almost every junior player and the addition of top transfers from the portal.

“At Ohio State, beating our rivals and winning every game is the expectation every year,” Day stated confidently. “Having good players definitely increases our chances, so we aim to recruit the best talent available.”

Day acknowledged the impact of NIL, stating, “Without NIL, our roster wouldn’t be as strong as it is now.”

After the disappointing Cotton Bowl loss, Ohio State donors stepped up to support the program, helping to secure key players like JT Tuimoloau, TreVeyon Henderson, and others who had the potential to turn pro. This influx of support allowed the team to retain top talent and pursue excellence once again.

With a strong returning core, Day also made strategic moves in the portal to address any remaining gaps in the roster. Notable additions included quarterback Will Howard, running back Quinshon Judkins, safety Caleb Downs, and center Seth McLaughlin.

The combination of Henderson and Judkins in the backfield is expected to be formidable, with their impressive career stats highlighting their potential impact.

“We aim to enhance our roster in key areas when opportunities arise,” Day explained.

Ohio State has options at QB — and a star receiver in the making in Jeremiah Smith

Prior to the bowl game on Dec. 29, Ohio State wasn’t heavily involved in the portal market driven by NIL. However, circumstances changed, leading to significant roster enhancements, including the recruitment of Howard and Downs.

Day’s efforts to secure funding for the program have been evident, with substantial investments assisting in building a competitive team. The offensive coordinator position underwent a notable change, with Chip Kelly joining the staff after Bill O’Brien’s departure.

Alongside the enhanced roster and coaching staff, Ohio State’s spring game will showcase the team’s progress and new talent additions. Notably, the quarterback battle between Howard and Devin Brown, as well as the impact of star receiver Jeremiah Smith, will be highlights of the game.

While challenges remain, such as uncertainties in the offensive line and the quarterback position, the program’s dedication to excellence and strategic investments set the stage for a competitive season.

With the bar set high for success, Ohio State aims to overcome recent setbacks and strive for a national championship, fueled by a strong roster, supportive donors, and impactful coaching decisions.
