President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni met and discussed with His Royal Highness, the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward at State House Entebbe. Prince Edward is a member of the British royal family, the youngest child of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip. President Museveni expressed his eagerness to collaborate with British investors and attract more tourists from the United Kingdom during their meeting, emphasizing the potential for mutual growth and prosperity. He informed Prince Edward that he tasked the British High Commissioner to Uganda, H.E Kate Airey, to facilitate these efforts and prioritize partnerships in business and tourism. The President also extended well wishes for King Charles III’s speedy recovery after learning of his health status from Prince Edward.
Prince Edward expressed his interest in Uganda and mentioned his plan to return with his family to explore the country further, specifically wanting to visit Uganda’s famous gorillas to promote tourism for both nations. He also highlighted the Commonwealth’s efforts to engage youth through leadership programs, aiming to empower them for positive community change. The Duke of Edinburgh shared his visit’s purpose of raising awareness about the award and non-formal education’s impact on young people, encouraging them to find their purpose and make a difference.
Mr. Blick William, chairperson of The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, Uganda, elaborated on the organization’s mission to empower young Ugandans through service and skill development. He mentioned the goal of expanding their reach with support from corporate sponsors and the government. Mr. Blick also requested the President to become the patron of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award program in Uganda, believing it would greatly impact its future. President Museveni accepted the role, acknowledging the importance of nurturing the next generation of leaders.
H.E Airey reinforced the enduring bond between the UK and Uganda, emphasizing collaboration across generations and supporting youth empowerment. She echoed President Museveni’s vision and highlighted successful UK models that could be implemented in Uganda for mutual benefit.
