Yunus Musah is rarely seen without a smile, his happy expression being a fixture on his face. But as he celebrated his first goal for the U.S. senior men’s national team in Austin, Texas, the sense of gratification was evident even for someone who is usually cheerful.
“That moment,” said Christian Pulisic, who assisted the goal, “that’s why you play.”
The goal in the 49th minute was a validation of Mauricio Pochettino’s coaching instincts as he made his debut as head coach with the team.
Coming into his first camp, Pochettino aimed to spend time with each player and understand their needs. Musah, who was tested in a new role, responded with a goal, showing that Pochettino’s approach was effective.
Pochettino’s focus on building confidence was evident throughout the game, with players encouraged to embrace their strengths and play freely. Despite not being perfect, the win against Panama was a step in the right direction for the team.
The win was an important confidence booster for the team as they look to continue their progress under Pochettino’s leadership.
“It’s the first step,” Pochettino said. “To start to grow and be better.”
