A detained preacher from the Philippines, facing charges of sexual abuse in both his home country and the United States, has taken a surprising step by registering to run in the upcoming Senate elections. It seems like an attempt to avoid prosecution.
Apollo Quiboloy, currently in police custody following his recent arrest, has enlisted in the Commission on Elections (Comelec) through his lawyer, who submitted his certificate of candidacy. The lawyer stated that Quiboloy aims to address issues in the country and run for the benefit of God and the Philippines.
The 74-year-old’s registration for candidacy happened on the final day of the registration period for the May 2025 midterm elections. Quiboloy is one of 184 candidates vying for the 12 Senate seats, alongside well-known figures like Manny Pacquiao and Imee Marcos.
Despite uncertainties surrounding his nomination by the Workers’ and Peasants’ Party, Quiboloy remains committed to his Senate bid. The preacher had been evading authorities since warrants were issued for his arrest in April for various charges, including child abuse and sexual abuse.
Quiboloy, a close ally of former President Rodrigo Duterte, is utilizing Philippine law to his advantage, allowing him to run for office despite the allegations against him. His unexpected Senate bid may be perceived as a strategic move to circumvent legal consequences.
