LAS VEGAS — Becky Hammon has been eagerly anticipating the moment when all of her Las Vegas guards would excel together.
During the 2023 season, Chelsea Gray, Jackie Young, and Kelsey Plum formed a dominant trio that consistently outperformed their New York Liberty counterparts, showcasing their strength in the WNBA Finals series. Even without Gray in the decisive victory, the perimeter trio displayed their prowess.
However, in the following season, Las Vegas struggled to find consistency in their guard rotation. Despite adding Tiffany Hayes to their talented group, the Aces often only had two standout performers in a game. This imbalance was evident in different matchups, such as Game 2 of the WNBA semifinals against the Liberty, where Plum and Young took turns shining.
Coach Hammon expressed her satisfaction after finally witnessing all four Aces guards deliver exceptional performances in a crucial game on Friday. With five players scoring in double digits, the Aces secured a 95-81 victory to force a Game 4 in their quest for a three-peat championship.

Hammon commended her team for their improved defensive efforts that disrupted the Liberty’s star player, Sabrina Ionescu. By simplifying their defensive approach and focusing on specific defensive principles, the Aces were able to contain Ionescu, limiting her offensive impact.
The Aces’ defensive success translated into a more fluid offensive performance, with the guard group leading the charge during a pivotal 16-0 run in the third quarter. This collective effort propelled Las Vegas to a commanding victory and kept their championship hopes alive.
With the Liberty struggling to find their offensive rhythm, the Aces capitalized on their defensive intensity to control the game. The guard quartet’s exceptional performance, coupled with solid defensive execution, was key to the Aces’ convincing win.
As they look ahead to the next game, the Aces remain determined to continue their pursuit of a three-peat championship, relying on their cohesive backcourt play and unwavering resilience.
