Anuar Fariz Fadzil, who is currently the Head of TikTok’s Public Policy in Malaysia, has been appointed as the new chief executive of Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), starting today.

He takes over from Mahadhir Aziz, who resigned from the position a month after being appointed CEO on September 01.

The announcement was made by MDEC chairman Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh at the Malaysia Digital Content Festival 2024 event in Kuala Lumpur. Noh stated that Fadzil’s new role presents an exciting opportunity within the digital economy.

Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo mentioned that Fadzil has a substantial amount of work ahead of him.

Established in 1996, MDEC is a government agency under the Ministry of Digital that focuses on leading Malaysia’s digital economy. The agency’s objectives include improving digital literacy, providing digitalization support to businesses, assisting tech companies in global expansion, and attracting investments in the digital economy.

Through incentives and regulations for development and reinvestment, MDEC aims to enhance Malaysia’s position as the digital hub of ASEAN.

On September 23, MDEC launched this year’s Investor Matching Programme to connect tech startups with a wide network of investors. Since its inception in 2020, the program has facilitated over US$300 million in capital matching, significantly boosting the growth of Malaysia’s digital economy.

In line with the Malaysia Digital national strategic initiative, the program aims to streamline access to capital for startups, foster innovation, and contribute to the nation’s digital transformation objectives.

Startups are matched with investors based on specific criteria such as investment amount and industry focus through the Investor Matching Programme. In addition to investment opportunities, participating startups receive valuable mentorship from seasoned investors, accelerating their growth.
