The United States has announced nearly $14 million in additional humanitarian assistance for refugees and their host communities in Uganda. This funding is in addition to previous commitments and brings total humanitarian funding in Uganda for Fiscal Year 2024 to over $83 million. The U.S. government provides humanitarian support in Uganda through various organizations such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the World Food Program (WFP), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and other non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The United States is the largest donor of humanitarian assistance in Uganda, providing approximately half of all funding. The nearly $14 million announced today was contributed by the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM) and will be distributed through six humanitarian NGOs.
This new humanitarian assistance will support programs in ten refugee settlements in Uganda and for urban refugees in Kampala. These programs will focus on providing education, livelihoods, mental health support, and protection services for refugees and their host communities. U.S. Ambassador William Popp emphasized the importance of the partnership with Uganda and the commitment to helping vulnerable refugees worldwide.
The humanitarian funding provided by the United States benefits both refugees and the local Ugandan communities hosting them. Each program includes support for the surrounding communities, ensuring local participation and creating job opportunities for Ugandans. Refugee-serving facilities are also accessible to Ugandan citizens, with millions of Ugandans benefitting from the services supported by U.S. funding.
The United States remains dedicated to working in collaboration with the people of Uganda to ensure the well-being of vulnerable refugees in the country. For more information on the U.S.’s partnership with Uganda, you can refer to the U.S. Embassy’s “Report to the Ugandan People.”
