Mandel’s Last Remarks: A Disappointing Week 3 in Florida for Florida and FSU

Here are 18 thoughts from Week 3, which was quite entertaining to watch unless you were in Gainesville or Tallahassee, Fla.

1. Florida and Florida State have a total of six national championships between them. They produce more blue-chip recruits than any state outside of Texas. The head coaches, Florida’s Billy Napier and Florida State’s Mike Norvell, earn a combined $17 million. So how can both their teams be struggling at the same time?

2. Florida State, coming off a 13-1 season, is now 0-3 after a disappointing 20-12 loss at home to Memphis. The Seminoles only gained 238 total yards and had some embarrassing moments on the field. FSU is now headed towards a 4-8 season or worse.

3. Florida had a rough loss, too, falling 33-20 to Texas A&M. The Gators are now in a tough spot, and it’s unlikely that Napier will last until Year 4. Florida desperately needs a new coach who can recruit well and bring talent to the program.

4. Quinn Ewers had to be replaced in the game against UTSA, but backup Arch Manning stepped up and played great in a 56-7 victory. The Longhorns have a talented backup quarterback in Manning.

5. Georgia barely escaped with a 13-12 win against Kentucky, but their defense continues to be strong. Georgia has won 41 straight regular-season games.

6. Alabama had a dominant performance against Wisconsin, winning 42-10. The Badgers are still struggling, especially after losing their quarterback to injury.

7. LSU had a comeback win over South Carolina, earning a 36-33 victory on the road.

8. Oregon State and Washington State had mixed results in their games over the weekend.

9. Notre Dame bounced back from a tough loss with a big win over Purdue, dominating 66-7 on the road.

10. Missouri had to come from behind to beat Boston College 27-21 in a tightly contested game.

11. Kansas State looked strong in a 31-7 win over Arizona in a nonconference matchup.

12. UNLV pulled off a 23-20 win over Kansas, improving to 3-0 on the season.

13. Oklahoma is looking different under new head coach Brent Venables, relying more on their defense in a 34-19 win over Tulane.

14. Indiana dominated UCLA 42-13, showcasing a powerful offense that looks promising for the rest of the season.

15. Pittsburgh continues to win close games, this time rallying to beat West Virginia 38-34.

16. Colorado’s defense looked strong in a 28-9 win over Colorado State.

17. UCF had an impressive comeback win over TCU, turning a 31-13 deficit into a 35-34 victory.

18. Toledo had a big win over Mississippi State, showing that MAC teams can compete against SEC opponents.
