The phrase ‘Monday Night Football’ might be familiar with intense matchups, but an NFL great facing off against Deadpool is definitely a first.
Here we have Tom Brady versus Ryan Reynolds, League One’s big spenders battling Hollywood FC — or simply put, Birmingham City versus Wrexham.
This fixture, recently dubbed as “an absolute banger” by Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney, is a big deal on and off the pitch for Monday night. Two clubs that epitomize globalized football will clash in a sold-out match aired live on both sides of the Atlantic.
“A really high-profile match,” says CBS Sports executive vice president Dan Weinberg ahead of Birmingham hosting Wrexham, which is part of the network’s four-year deal with the English Football League (EFL).
“We’ve covered every Wrexham game this season and will continue to focus on them. Their celebrity influence and visibility make them hard to ignore. Their growth in profile is exciting for us,” he adds.
Not long ago, a clash between Birmingham and Wrexham wouldn’t have garnered much attention in the UK, let alone the US. However, with the influence of celebrity owners and recent club performances, this League One fixture is now highly anticipated.
“What’s been happening there is unbelievable,” Scarr, a lifelong Birmingham fan, remarks. “Great for the city and the fans. The atmosphere will be electric, the stadium is packed, and there’s friendly competition between the American owners. But our goal is to spoil their celebration. Nothing else matters.”
