Unapologetic Supporters of Fossil Fuels in Africa Won’t be Intimidated by Criticism

Richard Worthington, an independent researcher and activist, has resorted to slander in order to garner attention by publishing an attack article against the African Energy Chamber (AEC) (www.EnergyChamber.org) and its annual event, African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energy (https://AECWeek.com). He criticizes the organization for advocating for favorable finance to keep fossil fuel exploitation profitable, rather than addressing the root causes of Africa’s energy crisis.

The AEC has been subject to criticism over the years for its efforts to promote Africa’s energy sector and drive development across the continent. However, these criticisms pale in comparison to the daily reality faced by over 600 million Africans who still lack access to electricity. Despite the ongoing attacks, the AEC remains dedicated to addressing energy poverty and bringing about impactful change in Africa.

Worthington’s focus on criticizing fossil fuel exploitation overlooks the fact that profits from Africa’s resources have historically benefited western companies and nations, rather than contributing to Africa’s development. Instead of offering constructive solutions, he advocates for moving away from fossil fuels without providing a viable alternative for Africa’s development.

The AEC remains committed to utilizing both traditional and alternative energy sources to drive inclusive growth and development in Africa. Despite the critics, the organization is steadfast in its mission to make energy poverty history and create economic opportunities for the continent.

Through events like AEW: Invest in African Energy, the AEC aims to facilitate collaboration, sign deals, and mobilize investment in key sectors like infrastructure, power generation, and renewable energy. The organization invites the media and industry stakeholders to participate in these efforts to drive impactful projects forward and transform Africa’s energy landscape.

Join us at AEW: Invest in African Energy 2024 in Cape Town on November 4 to be a part of this movement towards sustainable development and energy security for Africa.
