Xi Jinping holds meeting with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani

President Xi Jinping met with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani on the evening of September 3, 2024, during the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. The two leaders announced the elevation of the China-Mauritania relationship to a strategic partnership.

Xi Jinping emphasized the strong friendship and brotherly bond between China and Mauritania, highlighting the mutual trust, respect, and equal treatment between the two nations. China commended Mauritania for supporting China’s core interests and pledged ongoing support for Mauritania’s development path. The two countries agreed to deepen cooperation in various fields, including Belt and Road initiatives, fisheries, infrastructure, and agricultural technologies.

Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani expressed pride in the deep and solid friendship between Mauritania and China, thanking China for its support in various areas, including the fight against COVID-19. Both leaders affirmed their commitment to the one-China principle and shared positions on global issues such as Palestine. Mauritania praised China’s initiatives for global security and development and looked forward to collaborating on the FOCAC Beijing Summit to promote peace and development in Africa and beyond.
