The Journey of the Viral Olympic Village Muffins: From NYC to the Paralympics and Back Again

Originating from TikTok like many other trends that shape culture, the story of the “muffin man” began with Norwegian swimmer Henrik Christiansen. His posts at the Olympic Village during the Summer Games showcased the delectable chocolate muffins, capturing the attention of millions. These posts not only led to numerous duplicate muffin recipes, including one featured in The New York Times, but also inspired one New York City-based fan to go a step further.

Kelin Carolyn Zhang, an independent designer aged 32, was intrigued by Christiansen’s posts and decided to pursue the authentic Olympic chocolate muffins. Despite initial obstacles in sourcing the muffins from the wholesale supplier, Coup de Pates, Zhang persevered and documented her journey on TikTok. Ultimately, with the help of a connection in the restaurant industry, Zhang succeeded in bringing 300 of the coveted chocolate muffins from Paris to New York City for a pop-up event at Isshiki Matcha.

The event created a local buzz, with people lining up in the early hours to get their hands on the limited-edition muffins. Following the success of the first pop-up, a second event was announced, featuring a larger order of 1,000 muffins to cater to demand.

Zhang and Zheng, the owner of Isshiki Matcha, navigated various logistical challenges to make the event a reality. Despite the costs and complexities involved, both were committed to the project and pleased with the outcome. Positive reviews of the muffins poured in from customers, including American Olympians, confirming the hype surrounding these chocolate treats.

As the muffins made their way to a new set of reviewers in New York City, the power of the internet and collaboration between Zhang and Zheng became evident. The experience left both women inspired and hopeful that their story would encourage others to pursue their passions. While there were no immediate plans for a third pop-up, Zhang emphasized the magic of keeping the events tied to the Olympics and Paralympics, adding to the excitement and nostalgia.

In the end, Zhang, Zheng, and the dedicated fans who braved the lines got to savor the Olympic chocolate muffins and experience a taste of the Olympian life.
