Timor-Leste marked the 25th anniversary of its independence with a ceremony in the capital city, Dili, on Friday. The country gained independence from Indonesia in 1999 after a U.N.-backed referendum.
The celebrations included speeches, musical performances, and fireworks, with crowds gathering to commemorate the historic event. Dili was adorned with banners and posters, and residents reflected on the difficult past when Indonesia’s military responded to the referendum with violence before withdrawing.
U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres, who was in attendance, met with Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão and praised the country’s progress since gaining independence. Gusmão, a former guerrilla leader, has played a key role in Timor-Leste’s development.
The U.N. has pledged continued support for Timor-Leste as it works towards further growth and development. The country has faced challenges such as poverty, unemployment, and corruption, and its economy relies heavily on revenue from offshore oil.
