47 Ghanaians embark on fully funded UK Government Scholarships to the United Kingdom

Excitement filled the British High Commissioner’s residence on Thursday, 22 August 2024, as the British High Commission Accra, in partnership with the British Council Ghana, organized a farewell reception for the latest cohort of Chevening and Commonwealth Scholars from Ghana.

The event, attended by scholarship awardees, alumni, and key officials from the High Commission and British Council, showcased the enduring partnership between the UK and Ghana in promoting educational excellence and leadership development.

For over 40 years, the Commonwealth Scholarship has sponsored the education of over 2,000 Ghanaians, while the Chevening Scholarship has supported more than 400 young individuals from Ghana, Togo, Benin, and Burkina Faso in pursuing top-notch education. Many of these scholars have become trailblazers in various fields, from governance to climate activism.

The reception honored the remarkable achievements of the scholars selected for these prestigious awards. This year, 17 scholars will embark on the Chevening scholarship to pursue fully funded one-year master’s degrees at UK universities. Additionally, 30 others will study on the Commonwealth Scholarship. These scholars will be attending renowned UK universities such as Cambridge, King’s College London, Birmingham, and Glasgow, where they will pursue master’s degrees in areas like law, public health, education, climate, international security, and business.

In his opening remarks, Deputy British High Commissioner to Ghana, Keith McMahon, expressed his joy at hosting some of Ghana’s brightest minds before their educational journey in the UK. He highlighted the potential in Ghanaian youth, the transformative power of UK education institutions, and the growth achieved through collaboration between countries.

The Country Director of the British Council in Ghana, Nii Doodoo Dodoo, emphasized how the scholars being bid farewell to showcase Ghana’s talent and potential. The British Council is pleased to be a part of their journey and eagerly anticipates their successes and impact in Ghana and beyond.

The Chevening Scholarship is granted to individuals with ambition, drive, and leadership qualities to bring positive change to their home countries. The application window for the 2025/2026 Chevening Scholarships is currently open and set to close on 05 November 2024. Around 1500 awards are available globally. The British High Commission Accra invites eligible Ghanaians aspiring to further their studies in the UK to apply for this life-changing opportunity.
