Expansion of Canon Central & North Africa’s Young People Programme to Kahuho Primary School in Collaboration with Mindme International Kenya

The Canon Young People Programme aims to inspire, educate, and empower young individuals across EMEA through visual storytelling. It has reached over 1,500 young people in 33 countries by delivering more than 400 workshops. Through these creative storytelling workshops, the programme teaches young people how to express themselves using the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a framework.

Canon Central and North Africa, a global leader in imaging solutions, is excited to announce the launch of the second phase of its Canon Young People Programme in partnership with MindMe International, a registered NGO based in Kenya. This expansion will provide creative storytelling training to the students of Kahuho Primary School in Waithaka, Nairobi/Kiambu County.

Kahuho Primary School, which serves over 800 children, is dedicated to providing quality education and community development. This aligns with Canon’s mission to empower and inspire young people through creativity. Through scholarships and donations, every child at Kahuho Primary School has the opportunity to thrive in a supportive environment.

Jeanine El Moughrabi, Developing Regions Sustainability Manager, is enthusiastic about the initiative: “We are thrilled to expand our Canon Young People Programme to Kahuho Primary School. This collaboration demonstrates Canon’s commitment to supporting education and nurturing creativity among young individuals. By equipping these students with the tools and knowledge to tell their stories through photography, we aim to inspire a new generation of creative thinkers and change-makers.”

The training, led by professional photographer Joel Lukhovi, began on July 29, 2024, and takes place every Monday from 3 PM to 5 PM during the school’s photography club sessions. Lukhovi, a Kenyan visual artist, specializes in lens-based media and has successfully explored various forms of practice in photography. The programme includes 20 students, aged 12-13 years, with a balanced representation of 9 boys and 11 girls.

Canon Central and North Africa and MindMe International (MMI) joined forces in February 2024 to empower marginalized communities through sustainable development. The main goal of this partnership is to transform young participants into effective storytellers by providing access to equipment, teaching photography skills, showcasing examples, guiding participants, and encouraging them to tell their stories.

Through this collaboration, Canon and MindMe International Kenya aim to convey a strong message about the importance of empowering young people to drive positive change in their communities.

Carol Kiiru, Director-MindMe International, shared her pride in continuing the collaboration with Canon: “This programme goes beyond teaching photography; it’s about empowering young minds to view the world from a different perspective. By equipping these students with creative skills, we allow them to share their unique viewpoints and contribute to their communities.”

The Canon Young People Programme is guided by the concept of ‘Kyosei’, which means living and working together for the common good. This principle reflects Canon’s commitment to serving communities and enriching people’s lives through innovative products, services, and meaningful community projects.
