UNHCR Pledges Long-Term Support for Nigeria’s Overlooked Displacement Crisis

The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) is drawing attention to the situation of 3.7 million forcibly displaced individuals in Nigeria and the urgent need for sustainable solutions for them.

UNHCR officials, Raouf Mazou and Ruven Menikdiwela, commend the Nigerian government for fulfilling its international obligations by welcoming over 100,000 asylum-seekers and refugees from nearly 50 countries. They have pledged to enhance the self-reliance of forcibly displaced individuals in Nigeria following their visit to the country.

Nigerians account for over 3% of the world’s 120 million forcibly displaced people, with more than 3.6 million displaced within their own country due to various factors such as conflict and scarce resources. The number of internally displaced people continues to rise, with many relying heavily on humanitarian aid.

The recent high-level visit focused on sustainable solutions to this crisis, promoting a comprehensive approach involving the government, the UN, development partners, member states, and the private sector.

Efforts are being made to support the government, help displaced communities reintegrate into society, provide access to government services and create employment opportunities. UNHCR is collaborating with the government on agricultural projects, irrigation systems, food security, and rural employment initiatives.

The delegation visited Benue and Borno states, meeting returnees from Cameroon and emphasizing the importance of social and economic inclusion for all forcibly displaced individuals.

UNHCR’s regional director for West and Central Africa will prioritize sustainable solutions for displaced populations across the region, based on the protection environment, labor opportunities, and availability of funding.

It is crucial for humanitarian, development, and peace partners to collaborate in finding long-term solutions for displaced individuals. The focus is on supporting the government in addressing forced displacement while upholding the responsibility for protection and solutions.
