Negawatts.io’s Enhanced Energy Savings Strategy: The Power of Data-driven Approach

Negawatts.io, an Australian startup that provides technology solutions to optimize energy consumption for companies, is opening a new office in Singapore to expand into the Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand (ASEANANZ) markets.

The company recently completed the EnergyLab Climate Tech Charge program and aims to secure contracts with enterprises across Australia and the region.

In this interview with e27, Negawatts.io’s co-founder and CEO, Nigel Grier, explains the reasons behind the expansion.

Please introduce Negawatts.io.

Founded by Kor Choon Meng, Pat Jackson, and myself, Negawatts.io was created to address the pressing need for energy efficiency and sustainability in today’s world.

The term “Negawatt” refers to energy saved through efficiency measures. Our goal is to help asset owners surpass their NetZero goals while contributing to cooling the planet and protecting our biosphere.

Our approach goes deeper into energy efficiency compared to traditional ESCOs. We guarantee energy reductions between 40% and 70%, exceeding the typical 10-30% offered by other ESCOs.

How is Negawatts.io different from other energy sustainability startups?

Negawatts.io acts as the middleman between building owners and ESCOs, overseeing the standards, financial management, and overall process. By positioning ourselves in this way, we maintain high leverage over project success.

We differentiate ourselves by providing a holistic and integrated approach to energy optimization. Our platforms work together to create a comprehensive energy management system that maximizes efficiency across all facets.

Our “ESCO on Steroids” philosophy, with a long history of success, ensures significant energy consumption and operational efficiency improvements for our clients.

Tell us about your integrated solutions (vChill, mGrid, and vPool) and how they work together!

vChill optimizes energy consumption for central chiller plants, mGrid controls micro-grids for large facilities, and vPool facilitates financing for conservation projects. Together, they optimize energy consumption and resource management across various sectors.

How do Negawatts.io’s data-driven insights optimize system performance?

Our platforms leverage data-driven insights and predictive analytics to optimize system performance, prevent downtime, and ensure smooth operations for our clients.

Can you share examples of cost savings from pilot projects?

We have seen significant cost savings and efficiency gains in pilot projects. For instance, a commercial facility using vChill experienced a 54% reduction in energy consumption and substantial cost savings.

Our mGrid platform has helped industrial clients stabilize energy costs and integrate renewable energy sources.

Why did you decide to expand into the Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand markets?

We expanded into these markets due to the region’s focus on sustainability and the growing demand for energy-efficient solutions. Our integrated solutions align well with the market needs.

How are you engaging with investors in Australia and Southeast Asia?

We are actively engaging with investors through targeted outreach, highlighting the financial and environmental benefits of our solutions. We are also securing contracts with enterprises by showcasing the proven cost savings and sustainability gains our platforms offer.

What are your plans for securing contracts in Australia and the ASEANANZ region?

Over the next few years, we anticipate significant changes in energy optimization and sustainability, and Negawatts.io aims to play a pivotal role in providing the necessary tools and insights for businesses to thrive in this evolving landscape.

How do you address challenges in the competitive landscape?

Despite a crowded marketplace, we stand out with our integrated, data-driven approach that delivers superior results. Our focus on innovation and commitment to driving impactful change sets us apart and positions us for success and scalability.
