Under-the-radar Teams in the College Football Playoff 2024: 13 Unranked Contenders Poised to Shake Up the 12-team Field

2024 marks a new era for college football’s postseason with the introduction of the 12-team College Football Playoff. This playoff format includes automatic bids for the top five conference champions and seven at-large selections. The anticipation for the playoff bracket will continue to grow throughout the season, providing more teams with a chance to compete for a national title than ever before.

Many expect the nation’s elite programs to consistently secure spots in the top 12. However, the expanded field allows for surprises, especially in the inaugural year of the new system. In the list below, The Athletic‘s college football writers share their picks for this season’s sleeper teams that could make a run for the College Football Playoff. Teams that were ranked in the preseason Coaches Poll or voted as preseason media poll champions were not considered.

The Hokies are poised to have their strongest team since Frank Beamer’s retirement. Quarterback Kyron Drones showed promise by leading Virginia Tech to five wins in their last seven games in 2023. With Drones’ impressive performance, coupled with a solid defensive unit led by Antwaun Powell-Ryland, the Hokies have the potential to surprise many. Their high returning roster production bodes well for their chances to be a dark horse contender in the 12-team playoff field. — Kyle Tucker
