ANN ARBOR, Mich. — At the Brown Jug, a popular campus haunt, customers have the option to enjoy Jim Harbaugh’s 10 oz. Sirloin Steak or his father Jack’s Famous Brown Jug Burger in a sports bar named after Michigan’s rivalry emblem against Minnesota.
Similar to its namesake, a five-gallon Red Wing Pottery jug supposedly purchased in 1903 over concerns of water contamination, the Brown Jug restaurant has become entwined in Michigan lore. The narrative embodies a quintessential college football tale: an enigmatic coach, hints of espionage, and a plethora of conspiracy theories, all unfolding amid Michigan’s pursuit of three consecutive Big Ten championships and the 2023 national title.
Back in January 2023, well before Connor Stalions was embroiled in a sign-stealing scandal that rocked the college football world, and a year prior to the Wolverines clinching the championship in Houston, news surfaced of an investigation implicating Jim Harbaugh and Michigan in recruiting transgressions that transpired during the NCAA’s COVID-19 dead period. Allegations circulated that Harbaugh had treated two committed recruits to a “Jug burger” during an unsanctioned stop in Ann Arbor, only to deny the incident when confronted by the NCAA.
This tale of the cheeseburger at the Brown Jug gained widespread attention, feeding into the established narrative about the arbitrary NCAA rulebook. In response, Derrick Crawford, NCAA’s vice president for hearing operations, intervened by addressing the ongoing case after the NCAA’s Committee on Infractions rebuffed a negotiated settlement in August 2023.
“The Michigan infractions case augments impermissible on and off-campus recruiting during the COVID-19 dead period and impermissible coaching activities — not a cheeseburger,” clarified Crawford.

Jim Harbaugh penalized by NCAA for Michigan recruiting violations
Over the past three years, Harbaugh and Michigan have found themselves entangled in the convoluted web of NCAA investigations, appeals, negotiated judgements, and bifurcated rulings that have confounded most college football fans. The saga of Harbaugh versus the NCAA remains a story known to all but understood by few.
Despite departing Michigan to helm the Los Angeles Chargers after the tumultuous NCAA proceedings, Harbaugh continues to maintain his innocence. With the NCAA’s recent sanction of a four-year show-cause order and a one-season suspension in connection with “Burgergate,” it is evident that Harbaugh’s NCAA saga is far from over.
“Today’s COI decision feels akin to receiving a high school suspension notice while being an $80 million head coach at the Chargers,” remarked Harbaugh’s lawyer Tom Mars.
