During his State Opening of Parliament address, President Dr Julius Maada Bio highlighted the significant improvements in affordable and quality healthcare. He mentioned that investments in healthcare infrastructure have increased substantially through collaborative efforts with partners.
President Bio emphasized the commitment to affordable and quality healthcare in alignment with the global call for Universal Health Coverage. He mentioned leveraging health financing through partnerships with organizations such as the World Bank, Global Fund, and FCDO to reduce patient out-of-pocket costs.
The President also noted the recruitment of 5,000 healthcare workers, an increase in the number of doctors to over 600, and investments in capacity building to enhance healthcare efficiency. He highlighted training on new procedures, deployment of new technologies for disease detection and patient management, and ensuring the delivery of essential medicines and supplies to improve the national health system.
President Bio provided updates on initiatives such as the Public-Private Cost Recovery Pilot Scheme and mobile medical services through Hospitals-On-Wheels, which have helped reduce healthcare costs for patients. He also mentioned partnerships with organizations like Mercy Ships, which have provided thousands of free surgeries to citizens.
The healthcare infrastructure investments have seen significant growth through collaborations with partners like JICA, Partners in Health (PIH), and the UAE Government. Projects include the rehabilitation of Government Hospitals, new hospital constructions, and the implementation of various healthcare facilities across the country.
The healthcare initiatives have led to notable improvements in child and maternal health, meeting global standards and implementing new programs to reduce mortality rates. President Bio mentioned the introduction of the first WHO-approved malaria vaccine and routine HPV vaccinations, further strengthening health outcomes in the country.
The State Opening of Parliament event was well-attended by Parliamentarians, government officials, diplomats, local leaders, and citizens, creating a lively and enthusiastic atmosphere.
