PARIS — When Sunisa Lee’s confidence wavered and her body struggled to return to normal after battling kidney diseases, she found solace in her comfort zone: the uneven bars. Despite being a talented all-around gymnast, Lee excelled on the bars.
As she recovered, the bars became her sanctuary, where she felt most at home. Lee even worked on a new release move, aiming to have it named after her. Her coach, Jess Graba, supported her, urging her to do whatever motivated her, especially after the effects of her kidney problems left her physically and mentally drained.
Graba didn’t set specific goals for Lee, knowing she would set them for herself. Slowly, she regained her strength and received clearance to start training in January, with permission to compete. Despite warnings from Graba that she didn’t need to prove anything, especially after winning an Olympic gold medal, Lee pursued another opportunity.
Throughout the lead-up to the Olympics, Lee gradually added more routines, focusing on the bars and the balance beam. She maintained her resilient spirit, fueled by her success on the bars.
When Lee competed in the uneven bars final in Paris, she aimed to win but also enjoyed the sensation of performing well.
Securing a bronze medal with a score of 14.800, Lee was shocked by her success and the realization of her accomplishment. Despite doubts earlier in the year, Lee now possesses three Olympic medals from Paris and has a chance for a fourth on the beam.
Lee’s journey taught her to appreciate her resilience and find a balance between ambition and contentment. She opted not to attempt a risky signature move, heeding Graba’s advice, and focused on achievable goals instead.
Graba’s protective approach towards Lee reflects their changed dynamic, marked by his unwavering support during her struggles. He guided her with care, aiming to keep her aspirations within reach while preserving her determination.
Lee’s dedication paid off as she excelled in her routine, fulfilling a journey that began in adversity and culminated in triumph.
