e27 has been fostering a supportive environment for entrepreneurs since its establishment. Our Contributor Programme provides a platform for sharing unique insights.

As part of our ‘Contributor Spotlight’, we highlight an exceptional contributor and delve into their vast knowledge and expertise.

In this feature, we showcase Lydea Quek, Country Manager for Singapore and Regional Sales Director for APAC at Hackuity, a company dedicated to revolutionizing how organizations in APJ tackle cyber threats by precisely prioritizing vulnerabilities.

Quek’s tech journey is fueled by a dedication to solving complex issues, especially in assisting customers in navigating their security processes and tailoring solutions to meet their specific requirements.

Thoughts, goals, and journey

Quek’s cybersecurity journey began as a curious learner fascinated by the back-and-forth between hackers and defenders. This interest has evolved into a passion for safeguarding businesses from cyber threats. With almost a decade of experience in cybersecurity, she has honed her skills at prominent companies like Fortinet, Thales Security, and presently, Hackuity.

Her specialization in risk-based vulnerability management involves noticing a trend towards incorporating AI and machine learning for more efficient threat prioritization, as well as an increased focus on automation and orchestration to streamline processes and minimize human error.

She shared, “My upcoming professional goal is to expand Hackuity’s presence in APAC, ensuring our innovations assist more organizations in strengthening their security postures with greater precision. Personally, I’m eager to deepen my understanding of AI’s role in cybersecurity and perhaps find time to train for my next hiking adventure.”

The driving force

“My motivation stems from a desire to share insights from my startup journey and simplify the realm of cybersecurity for a wider audience,” Quek mentioned. “Contributing to e27 provides me with a platform to engage with like-minded professionals, exchange ideas, and hopefully inspire others to explore this dynamic field.”

She became a part of the e27 contributor group earlier this year and, through her articles, offers insights into cybersecurity and reflections on her tech journey.

Advice for budding thought leaders

According to Quek, emerging thought leaders should:

  • Adopt a learner’s mindset: Stay curious, keep exploring, and be open to sharing your unique perspective
  • Prioritize clarity in communication: Avoid jargon and focus on delivering value
  • Utilize storytelling: Incorporate insights into relatable narratives to make them memorable
  • Engage with your audience: Listen, respond, and evolve based on their feedback

Juggling too many things?

Quek mentioned, “Balancing work, contributing, and personal life as a working mom is indeed a juggling act. I prioritize by setting clear boundaries and concentrating on what truly matters.”

She utilizes time management tools and a structured routine to stay on track. For personal growth, she invests in continuous learning through formal courses or self-study and ensures she takes time to rejuvenate, whether through exercise, hobbies, or quality time with loved ones.

Staying in the loop

“Staying updated in cybersecurity is like attempting to keep up with a high-speed chase. I rely on a blend of industry blogs, podcasts, and webinars. Engaging with professional communities on platforms like LinkedIn and attending conferences also aid me in staying ahead of the curve. And, of course, nothing beats good old-fashioned networking with peers and industry experts,” Quek noted.

Her recommendations for cybersecurity resources include:

  • A classic in the field: The Cuckoo’s Egg by Clifford Stoll
  • For staying current: Security Now podcast by Steve Gibson
  • For daily updates: APAC Insider and ZDNet Security
  • For a broader tech perspective: Wired and TechCrunch

“I’d like to leave readers with this thought: In cybersecurity, the only constant is change. Stay curious, stay adaptable, and never stop learning. Whether you’re just starting or you’re a seasoned professional, remember that our collective efforts make the digital world a safer place. And don’t forget to take breaks and enjoy the journey — balance is the key to sustaining success,” she concluded.
