The ECOWAS Commission’s Humanitarian Response Team began a comprehensive 4-day field monitoring and evaluation mission in Liberia on Monday, 22nd July, 2024. The mission aimed to assess the impact of the food and nutrition response initiatives by the ECOWAS Commission addressing food security in various communities and cash transfers to flood victims. The response has reached 97% coverage, benefiting 1,878 households.
In collaboration with the Liberian Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Welt Hunger Hilfe (WHH), the National Red Cross, the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), and the ECOWAS National office, the ECOWAS team visited multiple communities. Beneficiaries and community leaders commended ECOWAS for its efforts and transformation towards becoming an ECOWAS of people. The leaders expressed gratitude and requested support for additional communities.
The ECOWAS team distributed food and nutrition assistance to beneficiaries identified by implementing partners. The food kits included baby rice cereal, fortified plantain flour, a bowl, a baby cup, and a spoon, aiming to provide comprehensive nutritional support for malnourished communities to recover and build resilience, following the project’s slogan “Building Back Stronger.”
Including women, youth, men, and persons with disabilities was a priority in beneficiary selection. Implementing partners incorporated a feedback mechanism for accountability and responsiveness to affected communities.
Five health facilities in Zannah, Pleemu, Koon, Nyehn, and Zingbor communities were identified and supported by the project, benefiting 30 communities. Thirty locally recruited health workers and six Area Awareness Teams facilitated the initiative, reaching 2,000 caregivers and 2,000 infants and young children in its final phase.
ECOWAS is dedicated to supporting the people of Liberia and ensuring the success of humanitarian efforts in the region.
