When Jeff Laflamme discovered the digital nomad lifestyle, he made the leap from his 9 to 5 job in search of something more. His journey led him to Siem Reap, Cambodia, where he founded AngkorHub, the first tech hub in the bustling tourist city.
Laflamme realized that the romanticized idea of working remotely as a digital nomad wasn’t always as glamorous as it seemed. The reality often involved struggling to find a stable internet connection and working long hours.
Despite the challenges, Laflamme was inspired to create a co-working space in Siem Reap. He saw an opportunity to not only provide a space for digital nomads to work but also to train locals for remote job opportunities.
Setting up AngkorHub was no easy feat. Laflamme faced obstacles like finding a reliable internet connection, sourcing furniture, and navigating the complex administrative processes in Cambodia.
As AngkorHub grew, it faced challenges in building a community of locals and expats. The hub’s focus on social innovation and talent incubation set it apart, but it took time for the concept to be fully understood.
Despite the challenges, AngkorHub has become a well-established co-working and co-living space in Siem Reap. Laflamme’s vision for the future includes expanding the hub’s offerings and continuing to support the local community.
With investments from an Angel VC in Singapore, AngkorHub is looking to evolve and revolutionize the coworking and co-living industry. Laflamme envisions the hub as a force for social change, highlighting the importance of community and collaboration in Siem Reap.
While Cambodia’s tech sector still has room to grow, Laflamme believes that grassroots efforts and collaboration with local universities are key to driving innovation and creating lasting impact.
