What is the maximum speed a human could throw a fastball? 106 mph, 110 mph, or even 125 mph?

The world of sports has been defined by records being broken and new milestones being reached. From the 10-second 100-meter dash to the two-hour marathon, athletes are constantly pushing the limits of human potential. In baseball, the speed of the fastball has always been a point of interest. The debate is ongoing about what the upper limit is for professional pitchers when it comes to throwing their fastest pitches.

There have been instances in history where pitchers have thrown incredibly fast pitches. Bob Feller once threw a ball faster than an 86 mph motorcycle, while Nolan Ryan was famously clocked at 100.8 mph in 1974. When converted to modern measurements, Ryan’s pitch would equate to 108 mph. Aroldis Chapman currently holds the record for the fastest pitch at 105.8 mph in 2010.

Since modern tracking technology has been in place since 2007, Chapman’s 105.8 mph pitch is considered the modern record. However, the question remains – what is the theoretical limit for fastball velocity?

Experts like Jimmy Buffi and Kyle Boddy have differing opinions on this matter. Buffi suggests that a pitcher could potentially reach speeds of 125 mph by optimizing the energy transfer from the ground through the body to the arm. In contrast, Boddy believes that new methods utilizing advanced technology and artificial intelligence are needed to unlock the potential for a 110 mph pitcher.

While the pursuit of higher velocities is exciting, it also raises concerns about the risk of injury. Some players fear that pushing the limits of speed could lead to arm injuries. Despite the differing views, one thing is clear – the quest for faster pitches will continue, driven by the competitive nature of the sport and the desire for excellence.
