Child Hunger in Sudan Increases by Nearly 100% in Six Months, Impacting 75% of Children

The severe food shortages in Sudan have escalated, with approximately 75% of children now facing daily hunger due to conflict, according to Save the Children. This marks a significant increase from previous months, with about 16.4 million children experiencing “crisis”, “emergency” or “catastrophe” levels of hunger.

The ongoing conflict in Sudan has disrupted crop production, leading to rising displacement and limited humanitarian access. As a result, 755,000 people are at risk of famine, including an estimated 355,605 children. The lack of adequate food can result in malnutrition, affecting children’s health and development.

Despite the growing humanitarian crisis, funding for Sudan remains inadequate, with only 16.8% of the required $2.7 billion raised. Save the Children is urging for immediate action, including a ceasefire, unhindered humanitarian access, and full funding for the Sudan Humanitarian Response Plan.

Save the Children has been involved in Sudan since 1983, providing essential support to children and families in the form of health, nutrition, education, child protection, and food security. The organization also extends its assistance to Sudanese refugees in Egypt and South Sudan.

Dr. Arif Noor, Save the Children Country Director in Sudan, emphasizes the urgency of the situation, calling for collective action to prevent further suffering and loss of lives.
