According to reports, former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is planning to run for a Senate seat in the upcoming mid-term elections next year, alongside his two sons. This decision comes after the political alliance between Duterte’s family and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. fell apart.
Vice President Sara Duterte, who recently resigned from Marcos’ cabinet, announced the family’s political plans. She mentioned that besides her father, her brothers Sebastian and Paolo Duterte are also considering running for Senate seats. Additionally, Sara revealed that her mother is encouraging Sebastian to run for President in 2028. Sebastian, also known as Baste, currently serves as the mayor of Davao City, a position previously held by both Rodrigo and Sara. Paolo, the eldest son of the former president, is currently the congressman for the city’s first district.
Amidst the turmoil following Sara’s resignation from the government, these announcements have set the stage for a showdown with the Marcos clan in the mid-term elections scheduled for May 12. The elections will determine all 316 seats in the House of Representatives and 12 of the Senate’s 24 seats, as well as numerous other local positions.
The strained relationship between the Duterte and Marcos families has been evident over the past two years, culminating in Sara’s resignation from Marcos’ administration. Duterte has been vocal in criticizing the Marcos government’s policies and actions, raising concerns about proposed constitutional changes and alleged abuse of power.
While Sara has downplayed suggestions of becoming the leader of the opposition, the rumored Duterte Senate runs indicate a strategic move towards reclaiming the presidency in 2028. The Dutertes’ popularity could potentially disrupt Marcos’ legislative agenda if they secure three Senate seats.
Despite uncertainties surrounding the Duterte family’s political future, critics have questioned their vision and coherence as a political force. Progressive party Akbayan described Duterte’s potential Senate bid as a desperate attempt by a fading political dynasty to retain relevance.
