Harry Kane stresses the importance of ex-England players taking responsibility in light of Gary Lineker’s criticism

Harry Kane has addressed Gary Lineker’s critique of England’s Euro 2024 campaign, emphasizing that former national team players have a “responsibility” to be mindful of the impact of their statements. England faced scrutiny after a 1-1 draw with Denmark in their second Euro 2024 group match, with Lineker describing the performance as “s***.”

Kane acknowledged the duty of pundits to be honest but also highlighted the challenges of representing England, given the nation’s historical failures in major tournaments. He expressed that former players should remember the difficulties of playing for England and be cautious with their remarks.

In response to Lineker’s comments, Kane stated, “What ex-players need to understand is the difficulty of ignoring criticism, especially for newer or less experienced players. They have a responsibility as former England players who were admired by many. People value their opinions and listen to them.”

Kane emphasized the importance of supporting and building up players’ confidence rather than criticizing them. He mentioned the long-standing trophy drought for England and called for a positive approach towards the team.
