Singapore-headquartered last-mile internet connectivity startup Transcelestial Technologies recently partnered with commercial space station Axiom Space to redefine space communications for government and commercial customers in Southeast Asia.
Together, they plan to revolutionize space-based cloud infrastructure interoperability using optical inter-satellite links.
e27 interviewed Transcelestial founder and CEO Rohit Jha to discuss this collaboration further.
Here are some key points from the interview:
How did the collaboration between Transcelestial and Axiom Space come about? What are the specific objectives and goals?
EDBI, an investor in Transcelestial, introduced us to Axiom Space. Impressed by our laser communication capabilities, Axiom saw an opportunity for collaboration. Our objectives include developing laser communication technologies for space applications, enhancing orbital data center capabilities, and achieving milestones in space communication security.
What technical challenges need to be addressed for interoperability between laser comms networks and orbital data centers?
We aim to establish an interplanetary network capable of handling Data in Rest and Data in Motion. Our LEO Satellite “Ring” network using laser communication terminals and Cloud capabilities in orbit will address these challenges.
What specific technologies will be shared and developed during the technical exchange with Axiom Space?
We will share optical terminals, network management systems, and prototype Optical Ground Stations with Axiom Space for testing and development purposes.
How do optical inter-satellite links improve space communications compared to traditional methods?
Laser inter-satellite links offer higher data transfer rates and increased security compared to traditional RF methods, enabling more complex applications and secure connectivity.
How does this collaboration fit into Transcelestial’s long-term strategic vision for space communications? What industries and applications do you anticipate benefiting the most?
Our mission is to address global internet distribution challenges and provide secure, affordable internet access. We see potential benefits in faster internet exchanges, Content Delivery Networks, AI services, and improving network access in Southeast Asia.
How do you anticipate this collaboration will impact commercial, civil, and defense markets in Southeast Asia? What new products and services do you expect to emerge?
We hope to enhance internet connectivity, support AI models, and provide edge data center capabilities in LEO. This collaboration can lead to new services and revenue opportunities in commercial, civil, and defense markets.
How does Transcelestial plan to leverage this partnership to grow its commercial networks and diversify its supply chains? What role does Singapore’s Office for Space Technology & Industry (OSTIn) play?
We aim to vertically integrate and establish local manufacturing and supply chains with the support of OSTIn and local partners. Their feedback and collaboration have been integral to our growth, and we look forward to continuing to work together.
