During the second day of TechWeek Singapore on Thursday, Dr Patrick O’Connell, Chief Digital Transformation Officer at the US Navy, shared the seven reasons why digital transformation efforts in organizations often fail.
According to Dr O’Connell, who was brought in by the US Navy to lead their digital transformation, the top three reasons include a lack of ownership of these initiatives from leadership, a limited budget that is spread thin and unstable, and the absence of a stable, full-time “all-star” team to drive the initiatives forward.
“Leadership needs to be actively engaged with the digital transformation program, even if they are not leading it themselves,” Dr O’Connell emphasized. “Without active involvement from leadership, the initiatives will not succeed.”
He also highlighted the importance of having a consistent and strong budget to support these programs over time.
“Constantly changing budgets as executives come and go can be detrimental to the transformation process,” Dr O’Connell pointed out.
Another critical factor in ensuring the success of digital transformation efforts is not relying solely on technology. Dr O’Connell stressed that digital transformation is about more than just technology; it also involves effective management, proper resources, and a supportive team.
While private organizations have more flexibility compared to the government in implementing digital transformation, they may also move slower due to less consensus among stakeholders, according to Dr O’Connell.
