Who is the top newcomer so far: Caitlin Clark or Angel Reese? WNBA rookie rankings

Despite being ejected from the game, Angel Reese had a significant impact in a recent matchup. The Chicago Sky rookie was thrown out for receiving her second technical foul with just over two minutes left in Tuesday’s game against the New York Liberty. Her second foul was later overturned by the WNBA.

Even with her ejection, Reese managed to score 13 points and grab 10 rebounds, securing her second double-double of the season. Chicago has already come to expect this level of performance from the No. 7 pick in April’s draft. Reese has been a consistent contributor throughout the first month of the WNBA season, along with other members of her rookie class.

From their college careers to being drafted into the WNBA and now starting their professional journeys, these rookies have brought new talent and excitement to the league. While they are still adjusting to the higher level of play, they are making meaningful contributions to their teams.

As we approach the quarter mark of the season, it’s time to highlight the top five rookies from the first month of play.

Caitlin Clark has been a standout player in her first month in the WNBA, despite facing some challenges last week. With 48 free throws attempted already, she ranks seventh in the league in that category. She has been an integral part of Indiana’s offense, showcasing her skills although her 3-point shooting has not been as efficient as in college. Clark faces a high defensive pressure, evident from her usage rate, which surpasses that of WNBA stars like Skylar Diggins-Smith and Breanna Stewart. She has shown areas of improvement and reasons for optimism, with a focus on reducing turnovers in the upcoming games.

Angel Reese, known for her double-doubles at LSU, has continued to impress with the Chicago Sky. Leading all rookies in rebounds and offensive rebounds, Reese has been a force on the court. Sky coach Teresa Weatherspoon admires Reese’s relentless pursuit of the ball, especially on the boards. Reese’s aggressive play and ability to draw fouls have been crucial for Chicago’s offense.

Despite some limitations in her game, Reese’s impact has been undeniable. While she needs to work on her shooting and playmaking, her potential is promising for the Sky’s future success.
