Uganda is planning to establish a resident Diplomatic Mission in South Korea to ensure maximum benefits from the relationship between the two countries. Hon. Okello Oryem, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, shared this information during a meeting with Hon. Chung Byung-won, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of South Korea at the first Korea-Africa Summit on June 2, 2024. The summit, themed “The Future We Make Together: Shared Growth, Sustainability, and Solidarity,” follows the 7th Korea-Africa Economic Cooperation Ministerial Conference in September 2023. Hon. Okello mentioned that two additional Memorandums of Understanding will be signed during the summit, including a Trade and Investment Promotion Framework Agreement and a Loan Financing agreement. This framework aims to provide predictability and stability for Korean investors in Uganda, facilitating cooperation and resolving any challenges faced by companies operating in each other’s markets.

Deputy Foreign Minister Chung expressed Korea’s commitment to capacity building programs for technology transfer, skill development, and manufacturing capacity in Uganda. The summit will also feature various conference sessions covering topics like business, agriculture, ICT, forestry, health security, tourism, and infrastructure to foster partnerships between Korea and Africa. The Uganda delegation will participate in several side events focused on areas like tourism, health partnership, infrastructure, and ICT.

The bilateral meeting included Uganda’s Ambassador to Japan and South Korea, H.E. Amb. Kaahwa Tophace, and Amb. Elly Kamahungye, Ag. Director of Regional and International Economic Affairs.
