Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) Simão wraps up successful mission to Mauritania, emphasizes the critical role of peaceful and inclusive Presidential elections in promoting good governance and peace.

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), Leonardo Santos Simão, concluded a five-day visit to the Islamic Republic of Mauritania.

During his visit, he engaged in exchanges with Mauritanian authorities and key players to enhance the partnership with the United Nations, especially in preparation for the upcoming presidential election on June 29. Discussions also revolved around regional peace and security issues, particularly during Mauritania’s presidency of the African Union.

Meetings were held with various government officials, including the President of Mauritania, H.E. Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, as well as ministers and other political figures. The Special Representative also met with representatives from the Constitutional Council, the Independent National Electoral Commission, and civil society organizations, including youth and women’s groups.

He commended Mauritania for its efforts in promoting peace and stability in the Sahel and urged continued dialogue and collaboration to strengthen democracy and sustainable development. Emphasizing the importance of peaceful and inclusive elections, the Special Representative highlighted their role in enhancing governance and peace.

Prior to departing from Nouakchott, he visited a refugee center supported by the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and interacted with women and young refugees. The Special Representative reiterated the UN’s and the international community’s support for Mauritania’s peace and democracy efforts.
