Update Meeting on Agricultural Progress in Eritrea

The Ministry of Agriculture held a meeting in Assab on 30 May to assess activities. The meeting focused on the progress of the first quarter and the five-year strategic plan. Similar meetings have been held across all regions since April 2024.

In attendance were Mr. Arefaine Berhe, Minister of Agriculture; Ambassador Mohammed-Seid Mantai, Governor of the Southern Red Sea Region; Brig. Gen. Abraham Andom, Commander of the Eastern Command; as well as the Chairman and members of the Regional Assembly, Administrators of sub-zones, heads of line ministries, and other officials.

The meeting discussed the key elements of the five-year strategic plan, such as land development, natural resource management, crop and livestock development, and human resources development. Reports were presented by Eng. Omar Mahmud on infrastructure developments and agricultural activities in the region.

Participants had extensive discussions and made recommendations, including supporting irrigation farmers and developing sweet potato farming. Minister Arefaine Berhe mentioned ongoing initiatives to increase agricultural production and called for reinforced efforts in various areas.

Ambassador Mohammed-Seid Mantai stressed the importance of strengthening information and data systems, ensuring water supply, and developing human resources and research activities.
