Four Sri Lankan nationals suspected to be ISIS terrorists were arrested by the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, India on May 20. This incident coincided with the arrival of three Indian Premier League cricket teams ahead of the 2024 playoffs.
Reports indicate that the suspects were in communication with an ISIS handler from Pakistan named “Abu.” The ATS seized an ISIS flag and three loaded pistols from the individuals. It was also revealed that the suspects intended to target BJP and RSS leaders for alleged mistreatment of Muslims.
The arrested individuals had previous ties to the group responsible for the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks in Sri Lanka. They mentioned receiving payment for their planned attacks. Furthermore, it was disclosed that all four men had criminal records, with one being the son of a notorious underworld figure.
Following these arrests, concerns have been raised about the presence of Islamic extremism in Sri Lanka. Various political parties and officials have called for increased vigilance and measures to counteract radicalization in the country. Additionally, there is a growing threat from the Islamic State Khorasan Province in South Asia, prompting countries like India to enhance their counterterrorism capabilities.
It is crucial for Sri Lanka to prioritize national security alongside economic reforms to effectively combat terrorism and safeguard its citizens from potential threats.
